What Are The Symptoms Of A Bad Coolant Float Switch?

A coolant float switch, typically referred to as a coolant level sensor, is a sensor that monitors the coolant level in your system. This sensor does not give you a reading of how much coolant you have, but it alerts you when your coolant level is low so that you can refill and identify why you are losing coolant. Here are a few things to look for that may indicate a bad coolant float switch:

Coolant Light Stays On - The most common symptom of a bad coolant float switch is your coolant light staying on. This is usually caused by a coolant float switch shorting out and triggering your coolant light to stay on.

Low Coolant - Checking your coolant levels manually is a habit you should form when performing monthly and yearly maintenance jobs. If you notice that you have low coolant with no coolant light coming on, your float switch may not be working.

Engine Overheating - On the opposite end of the spectrum, if your engine is overheating, yit could indicate that you have a bad coolant float switch. Overheating can be triggered by many different things, but if your engine drops low enough in coolant, your engine could overheat. If you were not notified of your coolant being low, it could mean your coolant float switch is malfunctioning.
